Life isn’t simply about living in a beautiful place, scuba diving in the world’s most beautiful waters or having one of the world’s most beautiful women, Sam (Jessica Alba) as your girlfriend. Nope, life just isn’t worth living until you’ve also uncovered the world’s biggest sunken treasure. It’s kind of hard to generate a lot of sympathy for Jared (Paul Walker) who already has the life that most people would kill for. But it wouldn’t be much of a film if Jared was content with his life. He doesn’t have as
much money as he’d like, and he can’t stand having to work for other people and watch them get rich. Even so, he still isn’t that motivated to change his lot in life until his
obnoxious friend, Bryce (Scott Caan), shows up and gives him a taste of the good life. His law firm has collected on someone’s estate, so he came to play in the Bahamas with his girlfriend of twelve hours, Amanda (Ashley Scott). While the four are out playing on the Jet Skis and riding on the boat they decide to do a little snorkeling at one of their favorite spots. Jared stumbles upon a few items buried in the sand, leading him to believe there may be a shipwreck nearby. As they search further, they also discover a sunken plane. The problem is that the plane is filled with cocaine. His first instinct is to report the plane, but it’s so close to where the treasure was found that they could lose claim to the ship. So after a lot of prodding, Jared takes his friend’s advice and decides to report the plane, but only after they have made a positive identification on the ship and can make a legal claim. This deeply disturbs Sam, who wants no part of it, and threatens their relationship. In order to salvage the ship, they’re going to need $30,000 just to purchase a new boat equipped with the necessary salvaging equipment.

That’s why Bryce feels he needs to go behind his back and swipe some of the drugs from the wreckage. He’s planning on taking just enough to afford the boat, but finds himself in deep trouble when he tries to sell it back to the same dealer who lost it in the first place. Now they have only two choices. They can either bring back the 200 kilos of cocaine or they can be killed. At this point the film changes into an action film as they try and outwit the drug dealers and maintain their claim on the treasure. The main point of the film is stress- ing how love is more important than money, and is something Jared real- izes once Sam gets into trouble. Of course, he’s going to end up winning everything anyways, so the moral falls a little flat. While the storyline is just above average, the beautiful scenery and underwater photography is well done and makes the film worth seeing. And if you’re a guy, how can you not like a film where Jessica Alba spends most of her screen time wearing a teeny bikini???
Hoping to use Bryce’s powerful connections and funding, Jared has picked out exactly what is needed to do the job. Unfortunately, his friend has to come clean and admit that he’s broke and already deep into debt. There’s another way to pay for a new boat, but Jared won’t even consider it.
